Missouri Riesling was considered nearly extinct after virtually all vines were destroyed in 1919 at the onset of Prohibition. Westphalia Vineyards rediscovered a single vine, planted in 1890, at the National Agricultural Experimentation Center at Cornell University. In 2005 we started with 5 cuttings and have propagated this varietal to now over 500 healthy vines. We call this experiment "Renaissance," the rebirth of a native American grape varietal.
